The Basics of Christian Meditation

Many believers associate the word “meditate” with Eastern religions. Christian meditation is not new at all. There are many articles, books, and even websites dedicated to the subject. But our best reference for meditation is the Bible itself. According to Joshua said in 1:8 we will have prosperity and success if we only spend time day & night meditating on God. Meanwhile, according to Psalms 16:11, the presence of God is fullness of joy.

christian meditationThere are a number of synonyms for the word, “meditate.” These are: cogitate, think, study, muse, ruminate, ponder, contemplate, reflect, and pray. Thus, Christian meditation is essentially the practice of contemplating, pondering, and musing God, as well as reflecting on his presence and his word. This is a method that Christians can implement in order to quiet their minds. This is necessary for us to know God and experience Him in a way that is personal to us.

In practice, one of the most common techniques of meditation is to focus on a word or phrase from scripture. This word or phrase must help the person silence his or her thought. This can then create the opportunity for the person to commune with God and connect with the Holy Spirit.

How about trying out Christian meditation not that you know what it’s all about? There are many benefits to Christian meditation. This can be the means to deepen your relationship with the Lord. It can also be effective in quieting that inner critic and eliminating negative thinking. Christian meditation is a way to relieve anxious thoughts and stressful behavior. In the end, a person who uses meditation in daily life will enjoy enhanced mental & emotional well-being.

Many Christians today are facing difficult challenges such as incessant negative & fear-based thinking, secular philosophies, and hectic schedules. All these interfere in their efforts to develop a deeper relationship with God.

Christians today tend to move farther away and our Christian walk suffers and becomes less fruitful. We find ourselves succumbing easier to depression, fear, stress and other toxic emotions. We do not become more Christ-centered. Instead, we just rely on human wisdom and not on our trust and faith in God. The outcomes are not very good—disillusion, burnout and weariness.

If we want to guard our hearts and minds and nurture our Christ-centeredness, we’d do well to spend time with God in reflection. When we commune with our Lord in silence and incorporate Christian mediation into our daily routine, we will soon enjoy emotional and mental well-being. Renewing our minds with Christian meditation will benefit us is more ways than one.

While we are engaged in Christian meditation we can focus our attention on a scripture passage or a sacred word. Some find it effective to meditate on his presence. Saying a mantra such as “Jesus” helps others find peace.

There are many repetitive thoughts that keep us from experiencing inner peace every day. If we meditate instead on scripture or a Bible phrase, we will slowly develop the means to control our minds and break the vicious cycle of repetitive thoughts. It will be easier to bring our focus back on the present quiet moment if we return our thinking to the Bible passage or sacred word as our thoughts wander off. After a period of time of doing this consistently, you will realize that you are better at quieting your thoughts and that you can better abide by the presence of God.

Are you stressed? Are you worried and restless? If your answers to both these questions are a resounding “Yes,” then here are possible solutions to your problems. Check out my Christina mediation CDs here. They are intended to promote peace of mind and restore your focus on God. Each Christian meditation CD starts out with a progressive relaxation exercise.

Afterwards a Biblical narrative is presented with soft music playing in the background. Eliminating Stress and Toxic Emotions is one of the most popular in the series. To listen to the samples and know more about Christian meditation, just click on the link provided.
