What does meditating on God’s word entail? When an individual is meditating on the Bible, he is quietly considering about God and focusing the mind on God’s truth. There has been neglect amongst Christians on the process of meditation. This is primarily due to the secular meditation practices and the popularity of the practice amongst Eastern religions like Buddhism & Hinduism and in New Age followers.
Many Christians are unaware that meditation is also a biblical concept. It is simply focusing one’s thinking regarding God’s Word such that we can hear God’s voice. This practice will help us apply God’s truth into our lives. Meditation is in fact an activity that involves the spirit and the heart. This practice has the power to renew us. It is time to stop neglecting meditation as a means of communing with the Lord.
It is true that not all meditation is Christian. Whereas secular meditation is a method of emptying the mind, Godly meditation is concerned with filling the mind with God and His truth. Godly meditation is essentially the practice of filling your mind with God’s word.
The Word of God should play a major part in Christian life because this is the place of origin of our knowledge of God’s existence. But first we must know the God’s Word. This is the very material that we will meditate on. Memorizing scripture is a significant component of meditation.
For meditation to be effective the person has to be still. Prayer may be a familiar concept to us because we Christians often practice it, but what meditation really is? Christian meditation is simply reflecting on God. It is different from Eastern meditation in that we do not enter into a trance and we are not always aware of our thoughts.
It is important to remember that the focus of Christian meditation should always be about God and how He cares for us. We also need to be willing to spend time meditating. When we think about God’s word, we can delve deeper by meditating. When you learn about meditating and spend more and more time doing it, you will have a clearer understanding of how God’s guidance works. If you do it every week, then your troubles will seem smaller than your previous perception of them. Despair will no longer overwhelm you and anxious and negative thoughts will fade into the background.
There is a kind of Christian meditation that involves thinking and reflecting on God’s presence or God’s word. Besides, a sacred word or “mantra” such as “Jesus” can be your way of entering into a state wherein you become open to God’s voice. This type of meditation may also use a passage from the Bible or a phrase that reminds you of how God works in your life. These phrases, when repeated consistently, eventually lead to your mind quieting down. You will find that your capacity for abiding in God’s spirit is increased. If you want to put an end to repetitive thoughts, Christian meditation is for you. It is also helpful in promoting freedom from worry, good health, relaxation, and contentment.
To increase your faith in God, it is helpful to learn about Christian meditation. Here is how you can start. Allot time ruminating on God’s word every day. If we do this, the Holy Spirit will teach us how we can better spend time with the Lord. We will also eventually learn how to open ourselves up when the Holy Spirit reveals God’s unseen realms. When we renew our minds with Christian meditation, God’s word will dominate our minds, taking the place of negative thoughts. This does not happen overnight, but with persistence, we will succeed. Let these words from Psalm 77 guide you: “Let God’s Word fill your memory, rule your heart, and guide your feet.”
